COLTS MASCOT HEADS TO LAST ROUNDUP
CAROLYN COLE
Edition:Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Mustang North's Colts are no more after school board members retired the mascot Monday night.
“You are Broncos now,” School Board President Maxine Morris told Mustang North teachers.
Principal Dan Allen said the push to retire the Colt started last school year with a survey posted on the school's Web site. Officials asked visitors to answer three questions about their opinion of unifying the two middle schools and changing the mascot, and if they were a parent, student or worker.
Allen said they also surveyed some sixth-graders this year and high school students who attended Mustang North. About 958 people were polled, including 681 students, 159 parents and 118 staff members.
Eighty-six percent of respondents answered they supported unity in school spirit between the schools, and 83 percent supported changing mascots.
“Every other school in the district is Broncos except Mustang North,” he said.
School Board Vice President Dona Zanotti asked if they considered any other options, such as making both middle schools' mascot the Colts. Zanotti, who works as a psychologist, told Allen the way the survey was worded skewed responses toward supporting the change.
Teacher Ryan Booth told board members he was a sixth-grader when Mustang North opened in 1984, and students were told they were the Colts. When he started teaching and coaching, Mustang emphasized consistency in curriculum and athletic programs. He said he was told everything he did in the classroom and on the field was an extension of Mustang High School's programs.
“Consistency was there in everything but the name,” he said. “We are one program, one group from top to bottom, but there still was always the name. The kids noticed that.”
The difference creates division between students as they move onto Mustang Mid-High, teacher Lindsey Fried said. As a former Mustang North cheerleader, she said former Colt students always stumble the first few weeks through the chants.
“You could always tell who came from north and who came from south,” she said.
The different mascot also creates confusion for booster clubs trying to order merchandise, Touchdown Club President Buck Irwin said. Mustang North teams can't get the same bulk rates other district teams can use.
Allen said the change would not cost the district anything because Mustang North has phased the Colt out of team jerseys and signs over the years. The school's floor was already up for resurfacing this summer.
Irwin said Mustang North and Mustang Middle School can still square off in competition without having different mascots.
“Having been to lots of games, lots of matches, lots of different things, I'm sure it was well intended, but the Colt mascot does result in some humiliation for the kids at Mustang North,” he said. “They are not Broncos — they are something less than Broncos.”
The board also approved Beckett Flooring Company's $46,583 bid to restore gym floors at Mustang North, Mustang Middle School and Mustang Mid-High this summer. Mustang High School's gymnasium will be resurfaced in 2011.
