WAVE CRASHERS: SCHOOL OFFICIALS BLOCK OFF PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT AFTER WYANDOTTE ACCIDENT
CAROLYN COLE
Edition:Friday, August 27, 2010

Mustang school officials cordoned off two X-Wave playground toys at elementary schools after a child in another school district died following an accident last week.
X-Wave toys at Mustang Creek Elementary and Mustang Elementary were marked off with caution tape. Shannon Rigsby, Mustang School District communication officer, said it was a precautionary measure.
“We are watching the reports of the investigation into the child's death and have cordoned off the piece of equipment until further notice,” she said. “Until a determination is made regarding the role the equipment may have played in the child's death, we are erring on the side of caution to ensure our students' safety.”
Wyandotte fourth-grader Alyssa Avila died Aug. 19 after an accident while she was playing on her school's X-Wave toy. The Oklahoma Medical Examiners Office has not ruled yet on a cause of death.
Mustang School District bought the X-Wave toys last spring as part of a $450,000 project to replace aging playground equipment and replace playground surfaces.
The equipment was purchased using MAPS for Kids funds.
The X-Wave looks like three short teeter-totters joined at the ends, allowing the benches to move up and down.
The toy is manufactured by Xccent Inc., which states in promotional material up to 22 children can play on the device at the same time.
The manufacturer's catalog lists the X-Wave's price at $5,299.
